What gear do I need to start rallying?

At a minimum, the driver and co-driver need a helmet with HANS, a fireproof suit, underwear, gloves and boots, all with valid FIA homologation. In the car, regulations usually require bucket seats, harnesses, an extinguisher and a roll cage.

The exact requirements depend on the event and the category, so always check its supplementary regulations.

Which FIA homologation do I need?

It depends on the standard for each item: suits and fireproof clothing use FIA 8856-2018, helmets FIA 8859 or 8860, bucket seats FIA 8855 and harnesses FIA 8853-2016. Your championship's regulations state which ones are mandatory and from what date.

Do homologated items expire?

Yes, most of them. FIA 8856-2018 fireproof clothing is valid for 10 years from manufacture, and bucket seats and harnesses also show their date of manufacture or validity on the label. All of this is checked at scrutineering. Check the dates before each season and, if you are replacing an item, choose the most recent standard so it lasts longer.

Is an FIA-homologated accessory valid for road use?

Not necessarily. FIA homologation is for competition and is not the same as homologation for use on public roads. For example, fixed-back bucket seats are for competition only; road cars use semi-bucket seats, which also need to be legalised. If in doubt, ask us.

What does the co-driver need besides their gear?

As well as the same safety gear as the driver, the co-driver usually uses an intercom, a co-driver stopwatch and a tripmeter to follow the road book.
