HANS Stand 21 Club Series system, FIA 8858-2010 homologated. Reduces the risk of cervical fracture in sudden deceleration by 80%. 20° angle, compatible with FIA RRS Protect helmets via homologated Hans clip. Available in sizes M and L.
The HANS (Head And Neck Support) is the most important safety device in motorsport after the helmet itself. Designed in the 1980s by biomechanics professor Robert Hubbard after a racing friend died of a cervical fracture, the HANS reduces by up to 80% the risk of fracture or strain of the neck muscles in a sudden deceleration — the type of injury that has cost the lives of many professional drivers throughout motorsport history.
The HANS Stand 21 Club Series is the entry-level version from Stand 21, one of the world's leading brands in driver safety. Homologated FIA 8858-2010, it offers the certified protection required by competition regulations without compromising the reliability and quality of the French brand.
The device sits on the driver's shoulders and the back of the neck, held in place by the vehicle's belt or harness. Two short, rigid tethers connect the HANS to the helmet via an FIA-homologated clip. In a frontal impact, inertia makes the head keep moving forward while the body stops abruptly — without a HANS, that force falls directly on the cervical vertebrae. The HANS limits that movement, transferring the impact force to the shoulders and torso, areas far better able to absorb it than the neck.

What is the HANS and what is it for?
The HANS (Head And Neck Support) is a safety device that sits on the driver's shoulders and connects to the helmet with short tethers. Its job is to limit the head's forward movement during sudden deceleration, transferring the impact force to the shoulders and torso instead of concentrating it on the cervical vertebrae. It was developed in the 1980s by biomechanical engineer Robert Hubbard and reduces the risk of cervical fracture by up to 80% — a cause of death for many drivers throughout motorsport history, including Roland Ratzenberger in 1994.
What does FHR mean, and is it the same as HANS?
FHR stands for Frontal Head Restraint , the generic technical name the FIA uses for this category of devices. HANS is the trade name of the first and best-known FHR system, developed by Hubbard-Downing. In practice the terms are used interchangeably, although there are other brands and models of FHR devices besides the original HANS — all serve the same cervical protection function.
Is the HANS mandatory in rally and competition in Spain?
Yes, it is mandatory in virtually all rally, track and autocross competitions in Spain under an RFEDA license. The FIA made the HANS mandatory in Formula 1 from the 2003 season and in the World Rally Championship (WRC) shortly after. Today it is a standard requirement in any official event. Always check your category's specific technical regulations before competing.
How do I know which HANS size I need?
The size of the HANS Stand 21 Club Series is determined by your neck circumference, not your clothing or helmet size. Measure around your neck with a tape measure: if it is between 38 and 45.5 cm, the correct size is M; if it is over 45.5 cm, you need size L. A poorly fitted HANS loses much of its protective effectiveness, so it is important to measure correctly before buying.
Is every helmet compatible with the HANS?
No. The helmet must have the specific Hans clip anchors, which most FIA 8859-2015 homologated helmets include as standard. The HANS Stand 21 Club Series is compatible with the entire range of FIA RRS Protect helmets via the homologated Hans clip. If you have a helmet from another brand, check that it has the side anchor points for HANS before buying — without them the device cannot be connected safely.
Is the HANS uncomfortable? Does it restrict movement much?
The HANS does restrict neck movement inside the car, especially when turning your head to the sides — which is necessary so as not to compromise its protective function. It may feel a little uncomfortable at first, and many drivers recommend exercising the neck and shoulders to adapt better to continued use. The removable, washable foams of the Stand 21 Club Series help improve comfort in long sessions. Despite the restricted movement, the safety benefit is so decisive that no serious driver goes without it.
When should the HANS be replaced?
Like any passive safety item, the HANS must be replaced after a significant impact, even if it shows no visible damage — the materials may have suffered structural fatigue invisible to the eye. It should also be checked periodically, respecting the service life recommended by the manufacturer, generally 5 to 10 years from the manufacturing date engraved on the device. The FIA 8858-2010 homologation has its own validity period — check your federation's current regulations before each season.
