What gear does a rally driver need?

At a minimum: a helmet with a HANS device, a fireproof suit, fireproof underwear (top, long johns, balaclava and socks), gloves and boots, all with valid FIA homologation.

The co-driver needs the same safety gear; the usual exception is gloves, which depending on the regulations may be optional for them.

What is the FIA 8856-2018 standard?

It is the FIA's current standard for driver fireproof clothing: race suit, underwear, balaclava, socks, gloves and boots. It ensures the garment resists fire and heat for a minimum time so you can get out of the car. Always look for the FIA label sewn into the garment.

Is fireproof underwear mandatory?

Yes, at events run under FIA regulations it is mandatory together with the race suit. It is the layer in contact with your skin and the one that protects you most against burns. Check your event's supplementary regulations.

How do I choose the right suit size?

Measure your chest, waist and height, and compare them with each manufacturer's size chart, as every brand uses its own. The suit should let you move freely while seated in the bucket seat without pulling at the shoulders or knees. If you are between two sizes, ask us.

Does fireproof clothing have an expiry date?

Yes. FIA 8856-2018 homologated clothing is valid for 10 years from its date of manufacture, which is shown on the FIA label sewn into the garment. Check it before each season.

It must also be in good condition: a torn, worn or fuel- or oil-stained suit may fail scrutineering, so follow the manufacturer's washing instructions.

Can you advise me before I buy?

Yes. We help you with sizes, the homologation your championship requires and helmet compatibility with your HANS and intercom. Contact us and, if you need to, finance your purchase over 18 months.
