The helmet is a driver's most important piece of safety equipment. No other accessory protects life more directly in the event of an accident. RRS offers a complete range of FIA-homologated helmets for rally, track and track days — from entry-level models with FIA 8859-2015 homologation to mid/high-end options — covering every driver's needs and budget.

Full face vs. modular vs. open face

Full-face helmet

Completely protects the head, including the chin and jaw. Mandatory in rally for all vehicles with a roof. The safest option and the most widely used in competition.

Open-face (jet) helmet

No chin protection. Permitted in some open vehicles (buggies, prototypes) and historic events. Always check the event regulations before buying.

HANS/FHR helmet

All FIA 8859-2015 helmets are compatible with HANS or FHR devices, which are mandatory at the vast majority of rally and track events in Spain.

Important: Snell SA homologation (SA2015, SA2020) is the North American standard and is not sufficient on its own in Europe. To compete in Spanish and European events, the helmet must carry FIA homologation — not Snell alone. If you have doubts about which homologation your specific event requires, ask us before buying.

Frequently asked questions about homologated rally helmets

Which FIA homologation do I need to rally in Spain?

For the vast majority of rally events in Spain — regional and national championships and RFEDA events — the minimum homologation required is FIA 8859-2015. This standard currently has no set expiry date and is valid for rally, track and international events. Helmets with FIA 8858-2010 homologation have not been valid since 2015. Priority-level WRC requires FIA 8860-2018. Always check the supplementary regulations of each event to confirm the required standard.

Do FIA helmets have an expiry date?

It depends on the standard. FIA 8859-2015 currently has no set expiry date. FIA 8860-2010 is valid until 31 December 2028. The 8858-2010 standard has already expired. Regardless of regulatory validity, manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 5-10 years due to material degradation, and always after a significant impact even if no external damage is visible.

Is HANS mandatory with RRS helmets?

At virtually all rally and track events in Spain, the HANS device (or equivalent FHR) is mandatory for drivers and co-drivers. RRS helmets with FIA 8859-2015 homologation are compatible with HANS devices. Check that the specific model you choose has the side anchors for the HANS — all FIA 8859-2015 homologated models must include them by regulation.

What is the difference between FIA 8859-2015 and the new 8859-2024?

The FIA 8859-2024 is the evolution of 8859-2015, introduced in 2025 with stricter impact energy absorption requirements and the ABP (Advanced Ballistic Protection) version for open vehicles. 8859-2015 remains valid and accepted at most events. If you are buying a new helmet from 2025 onwards, 8859-2024 models are the most up to date; if you already have an 8859-2015 helmet in good condition, it is still perfectly valid.

How much should an FIA-homologated rally helmet cost?

Entry-level FIA 8859-2015 helmets such as the RRS models start at around €200-300. Mid-range models with better ventilation, lower weight and more customisation options cost between €400 and €800. High-end FIA 8860-2018 models in composite or carbon cost over €1,000. To get started in regional rallying, an entry-level FIA 8859-2015 helmet is perfectly valid and sufficient.

Can I use a motorcycle helmet in rally events?

No. Motorcycle helmets follow different standards (ECE 22.06, DOT) that are not equivalent to FIA motorsport homologations. Motorsport helmets must have fire-resistant interior lining and HANS anchors, which motorcycle helmets do not include. No rally or track event accepts a motorcycle helmet, however high its quality. A specific motorsport helmet with the corresponding FIA homologation is mandatory.
