Frequently asked questions about performance exhausts

Will a homologated performance exhaust pass the vehicle inspection without problems?

Yes, as long as the exhaust has the corresponding homologation for your vehicle. Homologated exhausts comply with the European directive and come with the necessary paperwork, which you should keep and present at the inspection if requested. For road use, we only sell exhausts with valid certification.

What is the difference between a homologated exhaust and a competition exhaust?

A homologated exhaust complies with current noise and emissions regulations for driving on public roads and passing the vehicle inspection. A competition exhaust is designed to extract maximum performance on track or in rallies, but it removes emissions-control components such as the catalytic converter or the DPF, which makes it illegal for road use. They are clearly distinguished in the catalogue.

What is a downpipe and what does it do?

The downpipe is the first section of the exhaust system, connecting the turbocharger (or the exhaust manifold on naturally aspirated engines) to the rest of the system. It is a critical point because it is where the greatest restriction to gas flow occurs. Replacing it with a larger-diameter performance downpipe improves turbo response, reduces lag and increases power. On turbo engines it is one of the upgrades with the best cost-to-gain ratio.

Can I fit an exhaust with valves and still have it homologated?

Yes, there are valved exhausts that are homologated for road use. The valve lets you switch between a quieter mode in town and a more open sound when driving hard. What matters is that the exhaust, even with the valve open, does not exceed the noise limits set by the regulations. If you have doubts about a specific model, ask us.

How much power can my car gain with a performance exhaust?

It depends a lot on the engine and the system you choose. On naturally aspirated engines, the gain from a homologated exhaust is usually modest, between 3 and 8 hp. On turbo engines, especially when combined with a downpipe and an ECU remap, the gain can be significantly higher. To maximise performance, it is best to work on the intake and exhaust systems together.
