Downpipe
Surely if you are delving into the preparation of your car you will have come across the term downpipe.
What is a downpipe and what is it used for?
The downpipe is an oversized pipe placed at the turbo outlet to improve gas evacuation, thereby achieving an increase in power.
It is the elbow of the exhaust gas outlet from the turbo to the catalytic converter. In some cases, the catalytic converter can be removed or a high-flow, higher-performance catalytic converter can be installed.
The tube from the end of the catalytic converter to the street can also be called Cat-back , the cat-back can also be improved to help the exit of combustion gases in turbo or naturally aspirated engines. By replacing the first section that goes down from the turbo, with a larger diameter tube, we improve the release of the pressure generated by the engine and the higher turbo and advances in ignition management, thus improving power and torque.
With the downpipe we can gain between 15 and 20 horsepower (depending on the engine displacement even more) if we combine it with a reprogramming of the ECU we could gain up to 120 extra horsepower and improve the sound of the vehicle.
.
It should be noted that the downpipe is not a system approved for use on the street, it is only used in competition, therefore the vehicle cannot pass the MOT.
